Understanding spray foam certification pathways
Certification information for SPF installers is scattered — spread across individual equipment manufacturers, training academies, and industry bodies, each describing things a little differently. This page is a plain-language starting point: what kinds of certification levels generally exist across the industry, and roughly how members typically sequence their training.
Important: Spray Foam Union does not administer exams or issue certifications ourselves. This page is informational guidance for members, not a certification program.

A typical progression across the industry
Entry / Assistant Level
Where most installers start — foundational safety orientation, equipment familiarity, and supervised hands-on application experience before working independently.
Installer / Apprentice Level
Demonstrated ability to apply spray foam independently to a consistent standard, typically requiring some documented field experience alongside written and practical evaluation.
Advanced / Master Installer Level
Recognized proficiency across a range of application types and substrates, often required or preferred for lead-installer and quality-control roles.
Project Manager / Supervisory Level
Oversight-focused credentialing for people managing crews, quality control, and jobsite compliance rather than applying foam themselves full-time.
Exact level names, requirements, and renewal periods vary by which industry certification program you pursue. Members get access to shared guidance on comparing programs as part of membership.
Where to start
If you're new to the trade, start with your employer's on-the-job training and an entry-level safety orientation before pursuing a formal installer-level credential. If you're an established installer, a master-level or project-manager credential can support moving into lead-installer or supervisory roles. Members can reach out for guidance comparing specific programs.
